My daughter prompted this question in my head: is it possible to have a rainbow in space? Well, the "rain" part, no. But say, if you had ice crystals, would their form disrupt the prism of light, or enhance it? Make it look like it's on crack? Anyone know? I don't have a story idea for this one, but the concept of a space rainbow cracks me up.

OK

Firstly, Stephen King is a huge inspiration for me - I don't know a better writer that can drag a reader quickly in, and for (mostly) a lengthy novel, keep the suspense and interest going. I think he is one of a kind. BTW, I do not refer to the period of time when he decided to try to be "legit" and wrote a few "arty" stories. Give me "It", "Needful Things", etc any time.

I can't ever leave out of the discussion Tolkien. I read LOTR about ...

As you all probably know, I'm in the middle of a very prestigious creative writing degree at UEA. I have, however, found that being a fantasy writer makes me somewhat of a leper in my creative writing classes.

Last semester I did a Prose class. Everyone there but me was a realist writer, intent on shock value and gore (one person wrote a story about a girl self harming and eventually cutting off her own hand with a razor blade. You get the gist). Despite this, I got a good grade for my final ...

Her characters are so stagnant, it's the only way she seems able to stretch her plot out. If her characters had any sense of growth about them, she'd have a short story on her hands. Possibly a novelette.

I didn't fully grasp the problem in her Farseer trilogy, but it hit home in the Liveship series. OMG. It was awful. Kennit and that irritating girl who tried to get laid in the first book and ended up with the dragon crest on her head ...

What drives the life into your lungs, that pushes you into writing?

Seek you fame in the world of literary history?

How about fame in the world of Pop culture?

Are you looking for a name? Or a paycheck?

Do you wish to create a piece of art that rises above the stagnant norms our society has fallen into? Or are you trying to make quality entertainment that rises above the sensationalism ...

They do mention that it's likely that the sub-moon's orbit will decay and it will crash into the parent moon. But this ...

But there comes a point where you're not entirely sure how much science you should put into a science fiction novel - after all, if you're not completely comfortable with becoming a science geek, you can get a little anxious.

When I get the email that says there's a new message here in the forum, I click it and it takes me to the last page in the forum thread. Unfortunately, all the forum threads are posted in reverse order, with the newest ones at the top, and on page one. So if the thread is over a page long, I have to go find the first page to read the new post.

Hello, everyone. I'm Valkyrie, or just Val. I've been writing fantasy for over two decades now. I hope I've improved some, like wine and cheese, with age.

I write mostly adventure fantasy nowadays. My novel, "The Wicked Heroine", is of this ilk, and has kindly been accepted for publication by IFWG. See the moon up there? *points* That's me over it.

I've got a few short stories out there in the ether under my pen name, Jasmine Giacomo. Here's a couple:

Several Guilds, including interaction with members, represents even a bigger part. Additionally, I have chapters take part on two separate ships, where some of the crew and officers interact with the core characters. The nett effect of this is that a lot of characters are named and play some role, be it small or ...

I think Stephen King was a good example of an author who doesn't like outlines, but I also know plenty of people prefer structure behind he words. I suppose on the other hand, some authors would rather the story take a life of its own ...

Has anyone used 1st person pov to write a sizable work? I'm thinking of using self-contained chunks of 1st person within a 3rd person omniscient pov novel.

Do you think a reader would manage to deal with that change?

I made a list of names in my soon to come out novel and checked them in a large Tolkien companion and then Googled them, to find that many phonetic sounds in my welsh sounding names were also found in Tolkien. Some of these words were public domain so I'm keeping them (as no one should be able to copyright them) but many I had to change because other writers and gamers on WoW have already used them. Names such as 'Feena' have had LOTS of hits and Parn too. Having made them up myself, ...

Here's an author that has inspired me. Larry Hama. He wrote the GI Joe comic book for Marvel in the 80's. Based around the character of Snake-Eyes, Larry Hama created a vast mythology with roots in the Vietnam war and based around characters he created profiles for.

He thoroughly researched military history as well as foreign cultures and used these to form the characters. He let the characters and their backgrounds dictate his stories.

Has anyone else read the GI Joe comic book?

I am eager to see where they go with this in the next movie.
